Have you heard about the “babymoon”? It’s a trendy term for expecting parents who take a short vacation before the baby comes. I did it when I was pregnant with my three year old and I did it again this weekend, just four weeks shy of my scheduled c-section.
A babymoon might sound fancy but it doesn’t have to be elaborate. It’s usually a stay-cation of sorts, another trendy term for a vacation within driving distance since mothers are usually discouraged from flying in the third trimester. With my first pregnancy, we drove to Barton Creek, a fancy golf resort in Austin’s hill country. For our babymoon this time around, we wanted to keep things super close for babysitting purposes. I bid on a room at Priceline.com hoping to get a 5 star resort with a great spa. We ended up booking our babymoon at The Crescent, an upscale, posh resort in the heart of uptown Dallas. It’s somewhere we have always wanted to stay so I call it a bidding success! If you have never tried Priceline, I highly recommend it.
Our only agenda on this babymoon was a visit to the spa, frequent naps, in-room movies, breakfast in bed, brief walks around the hotel, sleeping in, and great food within walking distance. It’s a time to connect with your spouse and simply just rest. This second pregnancy has been a lot harder on me than my first so I really wasn’t up for much more than a super chill experience. I coined our time at the hotel as a “sleep-cation” because our main goal was to relax, unwind, and get in as much sleep as possible.
Sleep is not overrated, my friend. I haven’t forgotten the first twelve weeks of motherhood. We call it baby boot camp around here. Even though having a newborn is THE most amazing experience ever, you will miss you some sleep, mama. So please take my advice and go ahead and book that babymoon.
