One of my favorite Christmas traditions from childhood is creating an advent calendar. Year after year at the end of November, I would craft a paper chain out of construction paper and glue. Then each day in December, I would rip off one of the paper links and count down to Christmas day. It was fantastic and exciting. I really looked forward to it every year.
Fast forward a decade or two and the advent calendar has become a holiday decor staple in many households. You can get them just about anywhere in many different varieties but to a child, there’s something extra special about an advent calendar that you can create yourself. That’s where the Christmas countdown using gum comes in.
Kids love gum, right? I know my nieces and nephews do. How fun would it be to open a stick of your favorite gum each day in December to count down until the arrival of Santa Clause?
To create this advent calendar you will need scrapbook paper & embelishments, number stickers, double stick tape, scissors, and gum (of course). There really isn’t a particular method to these. Each child should use double stick tape to adhere scrapbook paper to two packs of gum and create a packet.
Pondering which gum to use for your gum advent calendar? I suggest Wrigley’s Extra Gum for this project. I love their Polar Ice, Spearmint, and Peppermint flavors for winter and the kids will too! They smell like everything wonderful about the holiday season.
